Interior Designer in London

Bringing Warmth & Character

London offers an extraordinary variety of architecture, from elegant Georgian townhouses and grand Victorian terraces to contemporary riverside apartments and converted industrial buildings. At Piers Thurston, rather than imposing a recognisable 'house style', we prefer to respond to the architecture itself, allowing each property to inform the design. All our interiors are rooted in comfort and authenticity, and the case of a London home is no different, balancing contemporary living with the original character of a building.

We’ll often turn to natural materials, tactile textures, layered lighting and carefully balanced colour palettes to create spaces that feel grounding and restorative. In our opinion, our role isn’t always to add more, sometimes it is about removing visual noise and improving functionality

Covering London From Richmond to Islington

Whilst we work throughout Greater London, our team particularly enjoy undertaking projects in neighbourhoods where architecture has retained a strong sense of identity. Areas such as Kensington, Chelsea, Fulham, Richmond, Hampstead, Islington, Clapham, Notting Hill, Belgravia and Dulwich all present unique opportunities to celebrate architectural character while introducing contemporary comfort.

Regardless, every project and home is given the same level of care and detail, and in our experience London homes in particular, require an enhanced level of spatial planning, with multifunctional layouts and bespoke storage solutions. By comparison to our Sussex-based homes where more attention may be paid to home entertaining or a slower pace of living, every square-metre of a London property needs to work that little bit harder, whilst acting as an antidote to the pace of the city.

Every project is different, which is why we offer a range of services tailored to varying needs and stages of the design journey. “IT’S BEEN A JOY”

Piers has bought the most considerate, thoughtful and inspiring energy to a very stagnant and quite daunting phase of my long-term house refurbishment. He picked up threads of my original ideas and ran with them, adding huge amounts of creative flair, knowledge of suppliers, and quietly confident instinct, which will create something so much more special than I ever could have dreamed of without his help. It’s been a joy.

Interior Design Tailored to London’s Heritage Architecture

Edwardian Homes

Edwardian homes are celebrated for their generous proportions, craftsmanship and decorative detailing, all of which we would look to retain and enhance, rather than remove or compete with. Original fireplaces, timber panelling, stained glass, and mouldings provide the foundation, with modern conveniences, bathrooms and storage solutions integrated sympathetically.

Victorian Properties

Georgian and Victorian townhouses possess as much incredible character as they do practical challenges. Tall, narrow layouts, lower-ground floors and compartmentalised rooms can restrict natural light and disconnect family living. Our approach prioritises thoughtful spatial planning, sympathetic structural alterations where appropriate, bespoke joinery and carefully considered lighting, to create an interior that feel brighter and better suited to modern family life, while preserving the architectural integrity.

Contemporary Apartments

Contemporary apartments usually benefit from abundant light, but they can sometimes feel impersonal and lack the character of heritage properties. By introducing natural stone, timber, linen, wool, handcrafted finishes, antiques and collected pieces, we can soften contemporary architecture and introduce a depth that cannot be achieved through decoration alone.

Mastering Conservation, Listed Status & London Project Logistics

Many London homes sit within Conservation Areas, are Grade II Listed, or fall under estate management by organisations such as the Grosvenor Estate or Cadogan Estates. These projects require careful coordination between architects, planning consultants, conservation officers, structural engineers and specialist contractors, and with experience delivering technically complex residential projects, our studio understands the importance of designing within these constraints rather than viewing them as limitations. Early collaboration with the wider professional team allows design decisions to progress smoothly while respecting both planning requirements and architectural heritage.
